It started with a journey to New Zealand, where I learned about the natural wonders of merino wool - a buttery soft material (unlike ordinary wool) that stops odor and regulates body temperature exceptionally well. Then I connected with some local innovators that were taking merino to the next level of performance. They patented a new fabric construction technology that made merino 9x more durable and 5x faster at drying sweat. Mainly being used by local NZ brands and athletes, I wanted to share this wonder fabric with the rest of the world. And thus, the Enhanced Merino Tee was born.

This tee is designed to help runners, athletes, and adventurers go further than ever before. During exercise, merino fabric's breathability has been shown to create a cooling effect of up to 4 degrees C when compared to synthetics. The shirt's odor resistance and enhanced drying time makes it the only shirt you'll need on your multi-day adventures. I can attest after wearing the shirt 3 days straight backpacking 38 miles across Catalina island.

I spent the last 4 years working on sustainability innovation at Hydrova with my close childhood friend. We were awarded grants from some amazing folks at the EPA and MIT, and our work got recognized in Forbes magazine and on national TV. I'm deeply passionate about climate change, and Avala's mission is to quantifiably improve the condition of our planet.

Producing the Enhanced Merino Tee generates 13.6 kg of CO2. For every tee sold, we are removing 18.6 kg of CO2 from the atmosphere. That is a net carbon sink of 5 kg per shirt! To accomplish this, we are investing in a) high impact carbon sequestration projects that are certified by top third-party standard groups including Verra, American Carbon Registry, Carbon Action Reserve, and Gold Standard and b) new renewable energy projects that offset our electricity consumption from fossil based sources. As a small business, our impact may be small at the start. But with your help, we can grow the scale of our impact.
